Best Of 2009: Console Edition

Here’s a Wii-tan to start things off.

With 2009 behind us now, why don’t we have a little look back in the previous year and see how did the consoles generally performed?

2009 has been quite an interesting year, with PS3 Slim launching and all, rocketing the sales volume of it’s poor console to somewhere along the lines of “owning the Xbox 360″.

However, despite the great success the PS3 Slim had in the previous year, it’s sudden popularity doesn’t necessary mean it’s at the top of the console charts. Well, if you compare the amount of games sold on each kind of console in total, then the PS3 would definitely not be up there.

Sorry 360-chan, you’re not exactly the popular one out of the three.

As Dengeki publisher ASCII Media Works had showed in it’s own charts, Nintendo has dominated the 2009 charts. The chart which records the amount of copies sold per game from 28th December 2008 all the way to 29th December 2009 had shown that Nintendo is still in power, with it’s usual offers such as Pokemon, Dragon Quest and even Super Mario. Interestingly, FF13 and Monster Hunter 2 is the only two games that ranks in the top 10 of the charts. I guess FF13 would sell a whole lot more in the coming future.

The chart which shows a total of 30 games, Nintendo had taken almost 2/3 of the charts, with about 19 Nintendo games on the chart. The rest of the 11 belongs to Sony and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is nowhere to be seen. Not surprising, seeing that Xbox 360 isn’t exactly the console of choice for many in Japan, although the 360 still remains as a strong console for all those riser sims, dating sims and all the other sorts of games.

If you’re interested, you can check out the chart in this link here.

Outside of Japan, the Xbox 360 is doing considerably better, while the PS3 is still catching up to the 360. Nintendo Wii is still being as it is, gathering a whole bunch of casual gamers under it’s flag, although people might believe that the Nintendo Wii is slowly moving it’s towards the more mature audience with the introduction of Dead Space: Extraction, as well as the whole bunch of Resident Evil games.

You wouldn’t mind having such a Playstation yourself, would you?

Undoubtedly, Sony had done a lot of work this year with the introduction the PS3 Slim. Microsoft is coming up with the Natal Project, and Nintendo is coming up with a HD version of their consoles pretty soon. All of these would transition pretty well into the year of 2010, making 2010 one of the more anticipated year for consoles. But in the end, Nintendo has done considerably better than it’s rivals in terms of game popularity, thus making Nintendo Wii and DS the best console and handheld of the year of 2009.

And of course, you can’t dismiss the probability of a PS4 coming soon, but that would be sometime later…

    Nah, I have to disagree.

2011 will be the year of the new consoles, and that’s the earliest, I really can’t see anything but revisions coming out this year.

I think next year is the year of Playstation, two reasons, people are only now noticing that the console is good and a cheap Blu-Ray player, and secondly, it’s the console of choice (I said choice, not brought) for Japan, the second biggest market in the world. It’ll dominate the market and kick the 360’s arse out of the game.

Where is Nintendo in this? Well, there consoles will stay where they are, but I think this will decline by the end of the year, with more people adopting the PS3. Handheld sales will rise though.

Why are visual novels on the 360 more than PS3? Easier to code, but as time goes on, they’ll change platforms.

    Just my prediction, that’s all.

Microsoft’s console is in a decline, while Sony’s PS3 is picking up speed. Nintendo Wii’s casual platform is doing extremely well as of now, and I think it’ll go up further with more release of those mature genre games on the Wii…

And yeah, the only reason why the 360 is doing well in Japan is because of all those moe games and stuffs like that. Minus that out, 360 is barely existing in Japan, which is actually kind of sad for Microsoft.

Actually, to be completely honest, new consoles would probably be release sometime in 2013 earliest I think. I doubt Microsoft or Sony would want to break their 10-years console life promise anyway…

360 is in a decline in japan and well some other country already (its a decline since namco and others pulled that trick out)

PS3 would not advance so far as due development for ps3 is so much more expensive and harder compare to 360 (well thats why people choose 360 frist lol)

as for wii it’s pretty much normal and slow pace well its generally console build for family bonding (u can see from the games they came out on the console)

The console platform now is at the rate of PS3> XBOX> WII

Generally PS3 will dominate market as a console but games will be first out on XBOX then ported to ps3 as usual =_= rarely see games now adays using ps3 as it base as firstly ps3 needed more $$$$$ to be spend to develop on though as we defintely know its superior to xbox (just see the specs of it lol)

But in return blu ray games are =(

i agree that ps3 will kick xbox arse but not any time soon just look at the reccent ports of game lol.

New consoles would not be any time out soon most likely the new ps3 mod would only appear, (yay i want to fucking play my old games in ps3)

Unless m$ or nintendo decided to pull something out of their sleeve
