In a recent interview with Blizzard executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo, Kotaku had reported that Pardo and the entire Blizzard team had already agreed on “No LAN” for SC2, as they considered LAN as “not much of a deal” if they happen to leave it out of the game in the final product.
The lack of LAN in the game had spurred on quite an amount of internet rage, as well as a petition that had over 100k signs as of now. It’s a rather touchy subject, especially when you’re taking it directly to the vice president of game design for Blizzard.
However, when asked if LAN is ever going to be introduced in SC2, Pardo simply said that everyone else (his development team) had accepted the fact that SC2 would not have a LAN mode. He knows that the general public is going to be angry over this, but he had also commented that “no one would know how much of a deal until the game comes out”.
The Starcraft team firmly believes that LAN is not much of a deal, though.
There’s a lot of people out there I think that are just afraid that they’re suddenly not going to be able to connect to the internet tonight and they won’t be able to play. I actually think that case is extremely rare, and I think we’re going to be okay.”
However, there are always the case of LAN parties. You know, getting together and have some massive LAN gaming, instead of trying to connect to the internet. Pardo knows this, and he had said that these are legitimate issues that is going to be addressed over time. While there is no real word on how the whole thing would work, he had mentioned that it might be possible that the new Battle.NET service would be able to detect your connection and determine if you’re close to each other. If you are close to one another, it’s might be possible to set up a peer-to-peer game.
While the new Battle.NET service sounds promising, I have no idea how would the peer-to-peer game work. Dawn of War 2 was one game that was shipped without LAN, but look at it now, it had included LAN mode in it’s latest patch. LAN “not much of a big deal”?
EDIT: Okay, so I was wrong about the whole LAN thing on DoW2, but still, who the heck doesn’t want LAN in their game anyway?! (thanks nzrock!)
Please!
