Once again, Japan has amazed the world with another marvel — Titanium Roof Tiles.

No joke here. Titanium is one of the world’s strongest metals, which is even used during space missions, and it has been successfully be converted into public use for purpose of roof tiles. Nowadays, many Japanese structures uses conventional kawara tiles, which is made of ceramic of dark gray clay.

However, one of the greatest weakness of the conventional kawara is durability. While the tile itself is actually quite strong, but with increasing pollution and through the natural process of wear and tear, it would seem that many of the old structures are in a disrepair state.

This is where Nippon Steel comes into play. By introducing a previously thought impossible metal, they have successfully made titanium into a size of a kawara. Boasting better durability and corrsion resistance, the titanium version of kawara is at least 92% lighter than the conventional tiles. It is also said that the titanium tiles are able to support the structure in case of a strong earthquake, as such natural disasters are a common occurrance in Japan.

However, with all the great propertities that titanium provides, it also inherits a great pricetag. Costing about 2.5 to 3 times the conventional kawara tiles, this might turn some people off. However, since that the titanium tile is so strong, the maintenance costs are drastically lowered.

While using titanium is a good idea, others have argued that it’s an utterly waste of resources. Such a rare metal being commercialized… it can cause a lot of problems, such as people starting to tear down roofs just to get the metals to sell away.

But nonetheless, it’s still an amazing discovery and invention from Japan. It’s really amazing how these people actually make things happens.
