You guys know you want this to happen.
Epic Games, the creators of the hugely popular game engine, Unreal 3 Engine has just recently released a free version of their engine for the general public to try out. No charge no nothing is needed. A free version of the Unreal 3 Engine has been released to the public and this brings about a whole lot of possibilities for the would-be game developers out there.
As many would have known, the Unreal 3 Engine is probably one of the most used engines in games these days, seeing that a good majority of the games nowadays uses this engine. Unreal 3 is an extremely powerful engine that is being used in different kind of games, ranging from RTS, FPS to even MMORPGs.
The free version of the Unreal 3 Engine, dubbed as the Unreal Development Kit, will provide all sorts of tools that a budding game developer would need to get cracking on their first game with the state-of-the-art engine. Before the release of such a tool, you’ll probably need to pay thousands or more to get your hands on the Unreal 3 technology.
The Unreal 3 Engine does seems to be easy for people to pick up, seeing that a 2-man team called Psyonix Studios had made a small game in under 2 months using the development kit. Epic Games had also stated people could go commercial with their own indie games, but royalty fees would be required once they had earned a certain amount of money. That’s it though. Better than paying a whole load of cash just to get your hands on the Unreal 3 Technology!
“I’m excited about the possibilities the Unreal Development Kit opens to those who are looking to get into the game business but don’t otherwise have the means to acquire world-class technology and tools like ours,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. “UDK is Unreal Engine 3, which has been used to create games in a wide range of genres, as well as military simulations, 3D architectural walkthroughs, animated movies and more. Users are only limited by their imaginations. Go ahead make something Unreal!”
Not only that, giving the developing community the chance to test out this excellent software would also help Epic Game’s future. The theory is simple here: devs tries the kit and they found it useful, then they are convinced to buy the whole software down for unlimited freedom in making their own game. Win-win situation, don’t you think?
With the release of such a development kit, we can probably see more indie studios coming up in the near future, as well as more and more games! Ain’t that good news for everyone who plays games?
