Female Otakus Loves What Male Otakus Loves?

sample-bc8ef2138bb0ef79a3ca5a22d5fed9fe

Looks like Konata needs to cut down her on expenditure!

A recently ended poll done by Japanese otaku matchmaking site Otakuma, reveals a little surprising thing that not many people would thought of. Yes, that’s right. The preference of female otakus these days.

In actual fact, the poll caters to both male and females voters. The poll which ran from April till August this year had turned out some pretty interesting results. A total of 1,283 people had voted in the poll; 923 males and 360 females in total. The results were surprising, to say the least.

Some of more general series such as Haruhi, CLANNAD, K-ON! and Lucky Star are well received by both sides. Others such as Toradora! and Minami-ke has only see single gender likability, but Gundam? Oh, don’t get me started on Gundam…

AnimeGenreRanking

As you can see from the chart above, male otakus generally lean towards moe series. Not really a surprise, although some of these show does interest females to some extent. However, what’s so surprising are the female otakus’ preference. As the chart states, it seems that the top 5 (4 out of 5) of what female otakus loves belongs to the mecha category!

Males:
01. K-On!
02. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
03. Lucky Star
04. Gundam (all series)
05. Saki
06. Shin Seiki Evangelion
07. Maho Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
08. Hetalia
09. CLANNAD
10. Toradora!

Females:
01. Gundam (all series)
02. K-On!
03. Code Geass
04. Macross Frontier
05. Shin Seiki Evangelion / Toradora! (tie)
06. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
07. Lucky Star
08. CLANNAD
09. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
10. Minami-ke

Think of it this way: Male otakus are generally the target of audience for such shows (mecha shows), right? Hell, even a good number of model kits collectors are made up of males! Extremely strange, if you ask me, although there had been talks that Gundam usually have a bigger female fanbase than males, but I’ve yet to see a chart stating that as of now…

Come to think of it, didn’t you notice that Kyoto Animation’s shows have taken 4/10 slots in the poll charts? We might be on something now!

Maybe we’re finally heading towards the direction where male otakus will prefer shoujo while female otakus will prefer shounen? I can’t bear to think of that!

Raiga: Wait, Hetalia ranks on the male side but not on the female side? o___O

True, midnightcoast has a point with regards to how valid the poll is. But it is quite surprising to some extent that Gundams are actually well-liked by the females that had taken the poll.

Yeah, I’m pretty surprised that Hetelia actually made itself to the list of the males instead of the females, seeing that majority of Hetelia’s cast are bishounen, something that is closely related to shoujo genre xD.

I’m not so sure how seriously we should take the poll. Generally you want to have at least 1000 respondants. The male side of the survey is closer to this and is probably a closer view of what males think. However the small sampling of the females… It may be a trend but it would be tough to say that when only 1 out of 3 are giving an answer. Plus you have to take into account that the poll is voluntary so some females may not have answered because they were embarrassed to expressed what they really liked. Also was this poll “fill in the blanks” or “pick from a selection”. This must also be taken into account. In the end the only thing I can say is that the results are interesting, but I wouldn’t put much into it.

This is very surprising. Gundam on first place? K-ON on the second? I thought there are few females who enjoy such series, but this survey proves I’ve been mistaken.

I’m most surprised about female otaku liking moe shows clearly targeted at male otaku, such as K-ON!, Clannad, and Lucky Star. If this poll was for Western fans instead, I think the results would be pretty different.

Personally I like about 5 out of 10 shows in the male category. I don’t really like mecha anime except Code Geass ( because the cover art to it looked cool so I checked it out). I do like Kyoto Ani’s works! I’ve watched most of them and I still need to finish up my Clannad marathon from a few weeks ago. I did watch Transformers on KidsWB here when I was small when it was still on KidsWB but that version was aimed at smaller kids I think.

I think that’s cool of females are into Mechas and if males are into cute shows. Breaking the stereotype I’d say.

well, mecha series has male lead and plot(less moe) so maybe that’s why

i thought the list of female otaku will all be consist of yaoi and shotas
and then now, i see lots of male oriented show
