When it comes to level design of a game, one would probably think that they would be encountering alternate paths to get to the end destinations. However, for the first three chapters of FF13, it seems that many would be way off for thinking that there are actually other paths that they could travel around to gain items or even defeat monsters!
Spoilers warning ahead, for those who wants to avoid spoilers.
Recently, a FF13 map had made it’s appearance in the Japanese internet, and this particular map documents the level design of the first three chapters of the game. As you can see from the map below, the first 2 chapters looks extremely straight (little to no detours or branching paths), somewhat on the lines of being on-rails, although it was mentioned that a small part of the first two chapters started off on a bridge. However, having two levels being extremely straight is somewhat uncalled for in a game!
Players will encounter a boss fight of some sorts at the end of the 2nd chapter, and by the 3rd chapter, it seems that everything is starting to go back to the normal kind of level design that you would expect from a RPG game. The first two extremely straight levels could be a design choice done by Square Enix in order to allow their players to get used to the new combat system. It might also be reasoned with Square Enix wanting the player to get absorbed into the game, without making it too hard for newcomers to navigate around the game. After all, FF13 is the first non-online FF game to grace the PS3.
Beware, extremely long image ahead!
It should be noted that the first 3 chapters that were said in the game actually lasts about 5 to 6 hours in length! And that’s barely one quarter through the game! One would really wonder how long Final Fantasy 13 is really going to be like…
