Nausicaa

Nausicaa, one of the first few works of Studio Ghibli first debuted in 1984. Since then, it has been re-released in a DVD format in 2005, and now, a Blu-Ray format in 8th March 2011.

The series was originally serialized as a manga.

Synopsis:

After a global war, the seaside kingdom known as the Valley Of The Wind remains one of the last strongholds on Earth untouched by a poisonous jungle and the powerful insects that guard it. Led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, the people of the Valley engage in an epic struggle to restore the bond between humanity and Earth.

Being one of the first few works of Studio Ghibli, Nausicaa offers an insight on the birth of Studio Ghibli in a sense, allowing their fans to appreciate all the works they had done so far to bring themselves to the top anime film position of today. The Blu-Ray Combo pack for Nausicaa comes with several goodies such as:

  • The Birth Story of Studio Ghibli
  • Behind the Microphone
  • World of Ghibli (a collection of videos regarding Studio Ghibli themselves)

The movie itself has also been praised as a masterpiece by critics.

Tales of Earthsea

Tales of Earthsea is a 2006 movie that was directed by Gorou Miyazaki, making it the first movie he had ever made with Studio Ghibli. Previous huge-hit movies were directed by Hayao Miyazaki, father of Gorou.

Regardless, Tales of Earthsea is a loose spin-off of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series, although the author had mentioned that the plot for Tales of Earthsea was “entirely different” from the original series.

Synopsis:

Based on the classic “Earthsea” fantasy book series by Ursula Le Guin, Tales from Earthsea is set in a mythical world filled with magic and bewitchment. Journey with Lord Archmage Sparrowhawk, a  master wizard, and Arren, a troubled young prince, on a tale of redemption and self-discovery as they search for the force behind a mysterious imbalance in the land of Earthsea; crops are dwindling, dragons have reappeared, and humanity is giving way to chaos.

Tales of Earthsea had done considerably well in the first weeks of it’s debut, but reception for the movie took a sudden turn after that several weeks. Many felt the production value was not as high as the films that were directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

However, despite all these, Tales of Earthsea does offer an interesting insight to a Studio Ghibli that was under a young Gorou Miyazaki, a person that would definitely be taking over Hayao Miyazaki in time to come.

Tales of Earthsea will be only available in DVD format, bundled together with goodies such as:

  • World of Ghibli (a collection of videos regarding Studio Ghibli themselves)
