H.A.V.E. Online — Where Anime And TF2 Meets

v1

Okay, I won’t go around beating the bush here, but here’s what people says about the korean MMO industry.

It’s just full of rip-offs here and there.

I can’t deny the fact that many MMO games from Korea are actually rip-off (or somewhat like that) of some of the original games out there, since I’ve played countless Counterstrike clones as well as Ragnarok Online clones when I was into MMOs sometime ago. Just run a search through some MMO game listing and you’ll probably come across some very familiar games.

However, this particular game has caused quite a number of koreans to be speaking about the similarities that it shares of the popular game, Team Fortress 2. Some of even called the game as an embarrassment to the korean industry.

The premise of H.A.V.E. Online is a little different from the Team Fortress 2. Instead of all sorts of desert like landscape, H.A.V.E Online is focused on indoors, much like a bedroom, if you will. Basically, the whole story of the game is that action figures suddenly comes to life, and started having a war with each other.

While there isn’t any details of the classes that are running around (because every single model seems to be carrying all sorts of weapons), some of the very significant weapons includes a Minigun-lookalike, a Baseball Bat, and Demoman’s signature Grenade Launcher. Since these items are actually toys, they don’t bear too much resemblance to the weapons of Team Fortress 2, but Baseball Bat? C’mon, BASEBALL BAT? Isn’t that an obvious rip off?!

If anything, the only awesome thing about H.A.V.E Online is the inclusion of female models. Mmhmm.

Via: Kotaku.

But other than some of the stuff described above, H.A.V.E Online actually looks kind of fun. However, regardless of how much people try to ripoff Team Fortress 2, I can safely say that it’s absolutely impossible to rip them off. Seriously, who can resist Heavy’s laughter while firing his Minigun? The characters of Team Fortress 2 makes the game, not the gameplay.

Here’s some comparison between the H.A.V.E’s trailer and Team Fortress 2’s trailer.

I love TF2 and I think HAVE Online is just start of blatant ripoffs of good games such as TF2 from Korea, Japan, China and other Asian countries who are trying to make big bucks. What a shame and hope they get sued big time.

” since some people “stole” the ideas of the the original QuakeWorld TF and made it into Team Fortress Classic.”

Actually, Valve hired the original QWTF team. All “Team Fortress” games are made by the same dev-team. There were some copies, namely Weapons Factory Arena (Quake 2), Q3F (Quake 3), and Fortress Forever (HL2).

The problem people are having with H.A.V.E. is that the phong-shaded lighting style (not cell shading, mind you) which debuted in this game, along with the 1960s evil genius style was copied, almost exactly.

Whoa, I thought Team Fortress started from TFC, not so far in Quake 1 xD.

Can merge this comment into the one above if you have to. In all seriousness, Team Fortress had its roots in Quake 1, which is centuries ago. In the original Quake World TF, all the base classes (Scout, Soldier, Demoman, Spy etc. etc.) were already out, and I wouldn’t say that the Koreans have “stolen” the idea of TF, since some people “stole” the ideas of the the original QuakeWorld TF and made it into Team Fortress Classic. I’m not familiar with the original QuakeWorld TF as I have never played it, but it is very different from TFC or TF2. A QuakeWorld TF old timer as complaining how spy was unbalanced in TF2 since the spy couldn’t cloak in the original QuakeWorld TF.

I think most people think that Team Fortress Classic was the first Team Fortress, but nope it really doesn’t start there. We should also be very grateful for people that make mods, as they are the ones that are truly responsible for many popular game franchises out there such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress (2 very prominent examples). Companies like Valve capitalise on the original ideas of these people, and that’s where we get popular and very replayable games.

The gameplay looks horrible. 3rd person? No. After watching this I think I’ll play more TF2 now. Although I need more people to play it with, the friends I actually want to play with have crappy comps so it doesn’t meet the requirements. Fail.
