If you haven’t read up on the particular incident with regards to Modern Warfare 2, you might want to drop by this post and read up on it.
In the case that you’ve got an idea of what’s happening with Modern Warfare 2, it seems that Infinity Ward has finally gotten around telling the community why they had chosen their IWNet infrastructure for multiplayer gaming instead of giving the players the option of running dedicated servers.
Basically, like Starcraft 2’s first announcement (even though they later dismissed it as no big deal) where LAN will not be supported at all, Modern Warfare 2 decided that everyone should hop onto IWNet to do some multiplayer matchmaking, instead of allowing potential server hosters to host dedicated servers for the general public to play.
The lack of dedicated server has shocked a good majority of the gaming community, and a petition to get dedicated servers back to Modern Warfare 2 has since been signed by over 100,000 people, making it one of the biggest petition since Starcraft 2 in the gaming community. In response to that, IW’s community manager had decided that they should clarify the issues to why “IWNet will be an improvement” and hopefully, it’ll convinced the community that the lack of dedicated servers wouldn’t make much of a difference with IWNet.
Stating the Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest investment that Infinity Ward has ever made thus far, it is said that IWNet is intended to work for every single player who owns a copy to get into the multiplayer aspect with little to no hassle at all. This is to allow any players to grab the game, run up the multiplayer aspect as soon as they like and engage in a game where nothing is required from them.
There are several benefits that were outlined by the community manager, fourzerotwo, many of them resembling the Xbox Live matchmaking sessions. Basically, some of the benefits that you’ll get with IWNet is a smoother gameplay, where the system will make sure you get the best connection amongst all the servers available; Party system, where everyone moves together from server to server as a group; and the best of them all: a hack and cheat free environment.
If you’re interested, you can check out the whole post here, where fourzerotwo lists out the benefits in detail.
Judging from the post fourzerotwo made though, it seems that dedicated servers will not be making an appearance regardless of how much signs the petition may amount to. Again, it might be possible that dedicated servers would be added in the near future due to consumer pressure, but that’s still speculation. Regardless, it’s confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will not include dedicated servers when it’s shipped, so there you have it. Absolutely no dedicated servers at all.
Now… let the sales figures speak for themselves.
