Still remember the time where previous Prime Minister Taro Aso had said something about an Anime and Manga Museum of some sort? The last time it was proposed, it was faced with extreme opposition from the other parties, and was viewed as an utter waste of money on the government’s side.
However, with the change of Prime Minister in Japan now, it seems that this Anime and Manga Museum, or sometimes known as the Anime Hall of Fame would not be able to be realized.
But the idea of such an institution is far from dead, as recently, the Japanese government had decided to replace the “Anime and Manga Museum” with something far more practical and cost saving than the previous plan which was proposed by the previous government.
This new proposal would pool the works and resources of about 16 different research institutions, some from outside Japan, and other facilities to collect and display works as well as conduct research. The plan would cost about 250 million yen a year, 25 million of which will be directed towards annual rental fees and operating expenses of the different facilities. 250 millon yen a year might look a lot, but as compared to the ridiculous plan of using about 11.7 billion yen to create a museum, the amount of money involved is greatly reduced.
The proposal will field in 5 different areas, something we all should be familiar with these days. The areas includes anime, manga, games, films and “media arts”. Instead of building a new building for such a museum, it is announced that the facility would use an existing building as a focal point for each task.
Certainly a good news for everyone who had wished that Aso’s plan didn’t fall through. Well, it is quite small in comparison to the one Aso had planned, but it’s still better than nothing, right?
