Is this finally the start of the robotic take-over? I hope not!
In the spirit of Christmas and the upcoming New Year, Japanese Department store chain operator Sogo & Seibu Co had revealed on last Friday, stating that they are offering two robots which will be made to look like the buyer who had bought them. This is stated as a promotion for the new year.
The robot, which costs about 20.1 million yen each, will be developed by robot maker Kokoro Co. Like mentioned above, those who would want to fork out the money for a recreation of themselves will probably be pleased as the robot is said to be made of silicon, and the upper part of the body is movable. The robot is also said to be permanently set in a sitting position, so those who are thinking of placing the robot otherwise would probably be disappointed. But come to think of it, it can be a good deal, as you can probably instruct the robot to go to your workplace instead of you…
If you’re interested, Sogo & Seibu will accept orders at most of its 28 outlets for two days from January 2nd, and for three days from New Year’s Day at the others. However, if orders does amounts to more than two orders (seeing that there’s only two robots for sale…), the lucky customers will be chosen via a lot.
The robots that are used in the sales has been on exhibition a couple of years back. Developed by Kokoro Co, the promotion robot was used in 2005 as a directory service which provides people with directions to events and places.
While the human resembling robots of today is simply too expensive to be mass-produced, who knows? Maybe this is the start of the robot’s plan to replace people, one by one!
