The issue of having LAN or not in Starcraft 2 is slowly becoming into one of the most important issue regarding Starcraft 2 itself. Many players had agreed that Starcraft 2 is taking the wrong direction by not implementing LAN capabilities in the game. Since Starcraft 1 itself had made such a name for itself solely based off LAN, it’s no wonder that majority of the players would want LAN to be available in Starcraft 2 too.
While Blizzard have their reasons for not adding LAN into the game itself — like fighting piracy –, many people are still unconvinced about how Blizzard (or more likely, Activision) is taking the game. There had been plans for a psuedo-LAN system, but that would totally defeat the purpose of having a LAN party in the first place.
In face of these problems, the same guys that brought Red Alert 3 with the first LAN Co-Op mode had announced that they would be working on a Starcraft 2 server, which will enable players on LAN to “host” their own servers and everyone else can connect through that server to have LAN games.
As quoted from them:
We are proud to present our new project – StarCraft II Server Emulator. As many of you have heard StarCraft II will not include a standard LAN-play feature. Instead, to start a Pseudo-LAN game, user will be prompted to connect to the Battle.net and initialize a LAN game from that level. The Battle.net server will connect the peers together using the fastest route possible (to keep the ping as low as possible).
Development, however, will take sometime as the team only has one single beta key for Starcraft 2. This means that they would be working on a beta Starcraft 2 server and *might* release it to the public as soon as they are done with it. Nothing’s confirmed as of now, but you can be sure that someone will be working on a work-around to this no LAN problem that currently exists in SC2.
