The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 hasn’t been receiving much luck of the late, seeing that it keeps running into more and more problems. First was the lack of dedicated server support, the outrageous stage in the game, then came the 9v9 maximum amount of players supported… it does make one wonder if Infinity Ward is truly supporting the platform at all.
And the latest in the whole episode of Modern Warfare 2? Digital Distributors had said that they will not sell copies of Modern Warfare 2 from their own services.
Many people would be familiar with several digital distribution platforms now, such as Valve’s Steam, IGN’s Direct2Drive, Impulse as well as GamersGate. While digital distribution is probably one of the more popular ways of getting games these days, it seems that Direct2Drive will refuse selling Modern Warfare 2 on their service simply because Modern Warfare 2 will be dependent on the usage of Steam’s Steamworks to gain achievement, saving, updates and all the other nifty features only Steam provides.
According to them, Direct2Drive doesn’t believe in having their users installing a 3rd party program when they buy a software from them. This is why they had decided not to sell Modern Warfare 2 on their own services. Impulse and GamersGate had followed suit, presumingly for the same reasons as what Direct2Drive had stated.
At Direct2Drive, we believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn’t be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased. Because COD MW 2 requires you, the consumer, to do that, we aren’t able to offer the game via Direct2Drive at this time.
Not only that, Steam is is yet another digital distribution platform, which is probably why the other distributors are rather reluctant on selling the game. Once installed, the user who had bought the game on their side will be exposed to the services offered by Steam, and this could potentially mean the loss of customers.
In the meantime though, Direct2Drive is offering a 5 dollars discount on all their Activision products. Not sure what it actually means, but hey, at least you’ve got the discount!
With Modern Warfare 2 a little less than a few days away, these news doesn’t exactly make the PC gamers comfortable as Modern Warfare 2, one of the highest anticipated game of the year might potentially go bust on them…
