“Arr!”
It looks like it’s official. Last year, Spore had claimed the crown of being the most pirated game of 2008, and this year, Modern Warfare 2 walks away with the cake by a big margin.
It should be noted that Modern Warfare 2’s exceptional performance during the first 24 hours sales is somewhat of an indicator of the piracy rate that it would inevitably gather. With 4.7 million units sold in under the first 24 hours, Modern Warfare 2 had effectively set a new record for the whole gaming industry. This, however, came with a price, as almost 5 million copies had been pirated since the launch of Modern Warfare 2 up till the 27th of December.
It shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise though, seeing that the console version of the game was available almost a week before the actual release of the game on consoles. Official figures is estimated to be about 4.1 million pirated copies on the PC, while the Xbox 360 fetched around 900,000 copies of illegal downloads. Adding them up will give you a whooping 5 million pirated copies! Both the Xbox 360 and PC charts had Modern Warfare 2 as the top pirated game in the whole of 2009.
Of course, the Wii has their own share of pirated copies, but instead of Modern Warfare 2, it was New Super Mario Bros. Modern Warfare 2 never really did made it to the Nintendo Wii, although there’s a Wii port of Modern Warfare 1, which is also called Modern Warfare: Reflexes for some reasons…
So, Modern Warfare 2 had gotten the title of the “most sold game” as well as the “most pirated game” now? Wonder what this means…
