Power Of The PS3: Used To Catch Criminals

And the PS3 officially joins in the crime fighting department!

You know, we’ve frequently heard of how good the PS3 is graphically but have you ever heard that the processing power of the PS3 is so great that it could actually help out in cracking hard-disks which can potentially convict a suspect of child pornography!

Here’s a little interesting bit: Federal officers in the US usually employ a Tableau/Dell server combination to crack the password of these criminals. However, in a 6 character password combination fashion, the amount of possible passwords could amount to 281,474,976,710,656 different passwords. That’s a lot of password to try, don’t you think?

Due to the fact that these criminals are at no obligations to give up their passwords after they had been arrested, the sheer amount of possible passwords makes life difficult for the officers that are trying to find proof to successfully convict these people.

Bad guys are encrypting their stuff now, so we need a methodology of hacking on that to try to break passwords, The Playstation 3 – its processing component – is perfect for large-scale library attacks.

However, you may think, “what has a PS3 got to do with cracking passwords anyway?” Well, in a sense, you could be right, but if used properly, the processing power offered by the PS3 could potentially be a powerhouse to break through all the possible password combination. As stated by them, a PS3 which costs around USD$300 would be able to provide the same power which the previous method — which costs around USD$1,100 — is able to provide.

When networked together, the processing powered of networked PS3s could easily breeze through about 4 million possible password combination in a single second. However, there’s a catch.

It seems that the PS3 Slim that had came out quite recently is not usable in their field of work, as the PS3 Slim does not allow them to install Linux on it. Whoever thought that the PS3 Phat is a pile of junk should probably think otherwise!

This begs about another question too, does anyone suspect if any one of the officers had actually popped in a game disc to play a PS3 instead of actually doing work?

The PS3’s graphic processing is quite strong, but the true power is in it’s processing as far as I can remember…
