Unlike it’s older brother, the PSPgo is not receiving as much attention as what the PS3 Slim is getting. While, certainly, the PSPgo is definitely getting some attention, it’s that kind of unwanted attention that the PSPgo has been receiving these days.
By now, it shouldn’t be news that a good majority of UK retailers have banded together to boycott the PSPgo because they believe that it will utterly rob them of their only source of revenue: games that are sold in UMD form. This is because the PSPgo is coming with a UMD-less form, and all games would be sold digitally. This means that retailers will not make much money from the handheld itself, as the mark-up prices on the handheld is barely enough for any retailer to profit.
And yet another UK retailer, Don McCabe from Chips, jumps in the bandwagon, claiming that he is “99.9% certain” that the PSPgo will be a massive failure. According to him, he had stated that Sony had blindly copied how Apple did with their iTunes store, and that a PSN store for games would simply not work out at all.
These comments are obviously not comments that Sony would want to hear, especially from someone who serves as a salesperson to potential customers.
However, McCabe had apparently said that the PSPgo wouldn’t be that bad off, since there would be at least a few people getting on the PSN to actually download digital games. But he had also noted that “these few people” wouldn’t be enough for Sony to make any sum of money at all, and it will most definitely fail in the end.
What do you think the PSPgo will turn out to be? While the UMD-less feature is certainly a plus for many consumers, the retailers who are trying to make a living through the sales of games would lose quite a portion of their earnings and it may very well come to the point where all retailers gives up on selling games!
