Rumour: Diablo 3 Delayed Because Of Clone?

diablo3

It’s a really disheartening thing to see all these, but Blizzard might just have a reason why they had been delaying Diablo 3 for ages now.

As many would have known, Diablo 3 was actually stated for release about December last year, although Diablo 3 never really came out when the time came about. Starcraft 2, which was due to be released after Diablo 3 have also been pushed forward, and it will see it’s own release next year. However, it seems that there are some rumours floating around the web with regards to why Blizzard had delayed Diablo 3 to the next few years.

If you guys have been monitoring the MMORPG space, you’ll probably know that there’s an MMORPG called Torchlight Torchlight, a game which was developed by Runic Games and released a little less than a month ago and it seems that it has enjoyed quite a huge amount of success thanks to many Diablo players out there. Why so? Simply because Torchlight closely resembles to how Diablo 3 is being played out.

(sorry for the misinformation, and thanks Karry for correcting this!)

This is how Torchlight looks like.

Torchlight, dubbed as a Diablo 3 clone which emphasizes on the cute factor, is widely recognized as the cute version of Diablo 3. No matter how much people look at it, it looks like Torchlight can be closely compared to Diablo 3 (skills, battle style, environment) in terms of everything. And this definitely does not spell good news for Blizzard as such a game out there will definitely dwindle people’s interest in their own unreleased game. Why care about an unreleased game when you can experience it first-hand in another game?

And this is how Diablo is like.

Blizzard has since stopped announcing any kind of Diablo 3 information, and this might further increase the suspicion that Blizzard is indeed in the middle of working out a whole new system for Diablo 3. It does not make sense for them to continue on the same system which was literally used by another game, seeing that people probably wouldn’t want to invest in a 60 dollars game when they can have the same kind of feeling in 20 dollars game and they can experience it without waiting for another few years. The very fact that Diablo 3 was pushed further to the “next few year” date might just be an indication of what Blizzard is doing now.

Blizzard’s no strangers to changing ideas when some other came with another idea that came close to their. Before the release of Diablo 2 in 2000, there was a game called NOX which had released sometime earlier, and shared some similarities to Diablo 2. Then, Blizzard placed Diablo 2 into a one and a half year worth of development to change, and this might just repeat itself for Diablo 3. After all, Blizzard have high expectations for themselves, right?

However, these are just simply rumours and speculations. Although these are rather valid arguments at this point of time (and the very fact that Diablo 3 got delayed even further just further proves the points), I highly suggest you take the above with a grain of salt. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Diablo 3 with a whole new system when Blizzard decides to announce more details follow the release of Starcraft 2.

You can check out more screenshots of both Diablo 3 and Torchlight in the gallery below.

“As many would have known, Diablo 3 was actually stated for release about December last year…”

Do you have a source for that? When they released the first video and created the site for D2 they had stated that they were investing at least another year in creating content. The plans seemed to have always been for a 2010 release.

I was looking through several release dates that had appeared in major game sites (you’ll not find these dates anymore now, since they are quite old news…) and it was written as Q4 2008. There was a lot of talk about Starcraft 2 happening on the 31 December 2008, but it didn’t came through.

Not only that, Starcraft 2 was to be released before Diablo 3 during that time (both are slated on December), but since that missed release date for the Q4 2008, there hasn’t been news about a new release date for D3 anymore.

It was stated by Vivendi who was the publisher for D3 back then, it was stated that D3 was to have a rough release date of 12/1/2008 (MM/DD/YYYY), but then again, there was lots of talks about it being false since Vivendi really does not have an idea of when it’s going to be released. I think that was the last date that D3 had.

Now that Blizzard’s with Activision, who knows what would happen?

It says something when every isometric view type game has “Diablo clone” attached to it. I’m not surprised that Blizzard would take it’s time with Diablo 3 considering the high expectations of the fans. Developers often will look arround at what people are playing, what they like about those games. Then they look at their own game and sometimes decide to start from scratch. Did Torchlight contribute to the delay of Diablo 3? Who knows. On a side note, I am one of the people who have played Nox and Diablo 2 and the only thing that Nox shared with Diablo was it’s isometric view type of playing. When Diablo 3 comes out we might say something similar about it and Torchlight.

    - Torchlight isnt MMO.
    - Torchlight isnt a Diablo clone.
    - Torchlight is nowhere near Diablo in gameplay quality
    - Torchlight is basically a pretty garbage heap. Correction, a pretty garbage heap with good music.

Its cheap, boring, and shallow. People who say its awesome are either stupid fanboys, or just started playing, or wanted the editor. The actual game is pretty bad.

Torchlight is a Diablo clone considering it was created with two of the original Diablo developers on board.
And for 20 bucks, it does what it needs to do. You click things, they die, you have fun doing it.
