Sims 3 Piracy Widespread

Lovingly pirated too. But there’s a catch.

If anything, the latest Sims game, Sims 3 is one of the highest pirated games in the year thus far. With several days to go before the actual release date, Bloomberg had reported that Sims 3 have been downloaded for at least 180,000 times. While the numbers are actually impressive, it would seem that these people aren’t really getting the full game after all.

There was a time when Sims 3 was release on the internet, and everyone was hyped over it and saying how fast the game came out. A 2 full weeks before the actual release date, the pirated copy made it’s way to major torrenting sites.

What the pirates didn’t know that the early release of the game is actually a pre-release build of the game.

An Electronic Arts representative Holly Rockwood had said that, “The pirated version is a buggy, pre-final build of the game. It’s not the full game. Half the world — an entire city — is missing from the pirated copy.”

The last PC game to be pirated to hell (literally) is Spore, but that was because of the DRM that is present in the game itself. Many people would opt for getting the pirated, non-restricted versions than paying a good 60 dollars for a high-restrictive game because of the DRM that are on the game itself. Sims 3, on the other hand, is said not to be supplied with any DRM, and the only verification method that it will use is the traditional method, using CD-Keys.

But I guess everyone wants to play this highly anticipated game earlier. Even while the game is pirated, there are actually a lot of users commenting that they will still buy the game, even after they have downloaded it.

With EA stating that PC is soon becoming their #1 platform to sell on, who knows what the future will hold for the PC gaming industry, even if it’s loaded with piracy.
