Konata is surprised that PS3 Slim isn’t making any money!
While the success of the PS3 Slim is undeniable, it seems that Sony is not really making money off the PS3 Slims at all. According to Sony boss, Kaz Hirai, the PS3 Slims are sold at a loss, and they aren’t making money off the sales at all.
So, how does Sony earn money from the consoles then? Apparently, Hirai said that revenue would be generated through the sales of the additional hardwares, such as the upcoming motion sensor stick for the PS3 and the patented emotion sensor. When asked about how much growth the PS3 had since the launch, Hirai had commented that the PS3’s growth rate of the installed base had been slow.
However, with the launch of the PS3 Slim, it seems that Sony is slowly getting back on track, although the figures aren’t anywhere as good as the PS2’s figures. The Playstation 2, after all, was the king of consoles for it’s generation. Hirai takes on a neutral stance on how all the consoles in the market are doing too, as well as providing some insights about how well Sony is doing thus far:
“I don’t actually know that that’s the true nature of the business that we’re all in, whether it’s PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii. I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year.”
However, since Hirai’s plan to maximize their profits via the sales of other hardwares, softwares and peripherals actually does work, it may very well mean that Sony might just dominate the console industry once again.
I’m extremely doubtful about PS3 Slim’s success, since I’m sure Microsoft would do everything to make sure that they keep the 360 as the most competitive console around, even though, when compared with the PS3, the Xbox 360 is clearly inferior to it.
