Cheering on the PS3!
We all know that before PS3 came about, the classic PS3 was generally a flop. According to official figures, it seems that Sony had lost a good sum of money with the classic PS3, totaling to almost USD$5 billion in total.
However, despite the bleak figures that the classic PS3 had brought in, Sony firmly believes that they are able to make 2010 into a profitable year for their 7th generation console.
According to Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda at Sony, it is said that the manufacturing costs of the PS3 has dropped by about 10 to 20%. They believe that it’s possible to have the hardware costs going all the way down to single digits sometime later, and it’s possible for them to reach profitability sometime in the next term. In case you don’t know, the PS3 was not exactly profitable for Sony until now, due to the fact that the hardware used in the PS3 were extremely costly, and Sony had decided that they would generate revenue through sales of peripherals.
With the launch of the PS3 Slim, Sony has seen the highest amount of console sales ever for their 7th generation console; recording as much as almost a million more than their previous year during this particular time of the year. While the PS3 enjoys success these days, the other hardwares of Sony weren’t doing as well.
The Sony PSP, as well as the Playstation 2 (dubbed as king of 6nd gen consoles) had seen significant drop on their sales volume, although it’s likely that these drops wouldn’t affect Sony’s profitability in the next year.
