A man being questioned over a car break-in escaped from the Nishinomiya Police Station while a 19-years old officer that was watching over him, dozed off. This sparked off a massive search for the suspect, and about 170 police officers were deployed to find the suspect before the suspect turned himself in.
The 32-years old suspect, named Takami Yonezawa, escaped the Police Station on Monday, at around 4.30pm, and later turned himself in at the same Police Station on Tuesday afternoon. Yonezawa was arrested based on suspicion that he stole a handbag from a nearby car at a coin-operated parking lot.
The man was brought to the Police Station for questioning, and the officers involved in the questioning were a 34-years old sergeant, and a 19-years old officer. The man escaped, however, when the sergeant went out for about 10 minutes to print a report, while the other officer, supposedly to look over the suspect, dozed off.
Officials said that the handcuffs on the suspect was apparently off, and the suspect was only limited by a leash. With the door to the room unlocked, the suspect apparently untied the leash, and let himself free.
The 19-years old officer has just recently emerged from the Police Academy and was assigned to the Police Station on training with regards to criminal investigations.
But, really, dozing off during work? Man, Japanese Police Forces are so relaxed. This raises concerns about their own local safety sometimes…
