The Troubles Of Drawing Traditional Manga

_MG_0798

Straight from the mangaka’s desk.

These days, majority of the manga that we’re viewing are drawn in digital form. Basically, most mangakas do a basic outline of the drawing they want, then translate it into a more detailed one when they continue the drawing on a preferred program of theirs.

If you’re an avid manga reader, the name of Azuma Kiyohiko should not come as unfamiliar to you. Recently, Azuma Kiyohiko had updated his blog with a post stating that all his works had been done the traditional method, which means editting manga panels via physical means, and it proves to be quite a hassle at times.

For the uninformed, Azuma Kiyohiko is the creator the hugely popular Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&!

With the recent finishing of the extra chapters of Azumanga Daioh, Azuma Kiyohiko had talked about the difficulty on working a manga that is not done digitally. For example, if he wanted to change the eye colours of a certain character, he would need to take a white correction ink to “correct” it, then draw on top of the corrected areas. Just think of the days where you’re in school trying to get rid of all the mistakes you’ve done on writing an essay.

However, drawing a manga is vastly different from writing an essay. While correcting the eyes of the character, sometimes he would think that the mouth or any other parts of the character is a little off. And of course, when you think it’s a little off, you’ll naturally edit it. In the end, the whole panel becomes full of correction inks!

Then at times like this, he would need to cut out the places where he need to change, move it onto another new piece of paper and then draw it from there.

Of course, this is a hassle and Azuma Kiyohiko had noted on his own blog that it’s probably time for him to move onto digital means to do his mangas. Maybe we would see more awesome arts from him when he moves to digital?
