The concept art for the International Manga Library.
While we will probably never see a “Manga & Anime Museum” — which was planned by Japan’s ex-PM, Taro Aso — it doesn’t mean that we’ll never see an establishment that will house thousands of mangas and the likes.
Recently announced by Meiji University, it is said that they will be building a library called the “Tokyo International Manga Library”, which is geared towards showcasing a variety interesting items that ranges mangas, figurines and more.
The library is visualized to be at least 5 stories high, and is aiming to be the house for about 2 million different kinds of mangas, doujinshis, animes, games, figurines and other medias. It is not clear if the Library will be built in an existing building, or if a new building should be erected for the Library’s purpose.
Unlike the Museum which Taro Aso had planned, the Library’s main purpose is to be a “serious environment” for people to “conduct research” and experience the history of manga for themselves. The planners for the library are also thinking of adding a theater and a museum of some sorts.
Not only that, Meiji University, the overall planner for this project has stated that they are working closely with Comic Market (Comiket) and others such as popular model producers and other manga libraries in the country to bring the best experience possible for their users when the International Manga Library comes up in 2014.
Not much details were revealed asides from that though. However, it’s still good to know that at least the project which Aso had first started is somewhat being continued… in a sense.
