It might not be too far off though!
Unreal Engine 3 is perhaps one of the most well-known game engines, simply because it boasts powerful graphics and it is one engine that many modern games uses these days. Some of the huge titles, such as Gears of Wars and others runs off this extremely powerful engine.
Of course, a powerful engine would promise some powerful graphics, but knowing the hardware limitations, is an iPhone a suitable candidate for such a powerful engine?
Well, most people would think “probably not“, seeing that the iPhone — while is an excellent gaming platform as of now — does not exactly feature the best of hardwares for such a powerful engine. However, it looks like we’re wrong.
As the video above demonstrates, the iPhone is indeed running Unreal Tournament, which is powered by the Unreal 3 Engine. Of course, not all the features are in there, as the demonstration only showed a watered down version of the original Unreal Tournament. Not exactly the most impressive demonstration you’ve seen, but it does mean something for the future of gaming on the iPhone.
Epic isn’t announcing any sort of iPhone engine licenses nor are they entering the iPhone game market. Porting UE3 to the iPhone is simply one of many projects being worked on inside a newer, more svelte and innovative Epic Games (wait till you see what’s next…)… Mark said they planned to make this available to licensees at some point in the near future.
And eventually? We might even see huge titles such as Gears of Wars running on the iPhone! Isn’t that trouble for the rest of the portable consoles out there? Who wouldn’t want to play a 7GB game on their iPhone anyway!
