What Are The Games That Made You (Or Japanese) Cry?

2519639_m

Looks like Leon Magnus is someone’s idol!

When I say cry, no it doesn’t mean that it’s so bad that you would start to cry and how bad the game is. Nor does it mean that you start to laugh till you cry. It just simply mean that the game was so saddening that you would start to cry over it.

To be honest, there wasn’t much games out there that would literally make you cry these days. However, there are some out there that evokes feelings of sadness in people. However, out of all the games I’ve played thus far, none of them had really brought tears to my eyes.

At a recent survey done by Orion, it revealed which games were the ones that had bought tears to people, or more specifically, Japanese people’s eyes. The survey was participated by a total of 500 people, and the results were rather surprising to say the least.

Here are what the Japanese have to say:

  1. Final Fantasy 10
  2. Dragon Quest V
  3. Final Fantasy 7
  4. Clannad
  5. Mother 2

If the last two games doesn’t ring any bell for you, don’t worry.  Clannad is actually a visual novel, and visual novels aren’t exactly the mainstream games outside Japan. Mother 2, on the other hand, was actually called Earthbound 2 in the English Locale, but due to several factors, it’s not exactly popular in the US. (thanks Darkfrost!)

I’m pretty surprised that Clannad is in the list at all. While it’s certainly true that Clannad does have a sad story (you’ll know if you watch the anime), I wouldn’t have expected visual novels to make it into the list! This does tells volumes about how great Clannad was as a game.

But Dragon Quest V? I don’t know where to begin!

Which of the above-mentioned games made you cry?

Clannad is life, as otakus all over 2ch would say. Do not underestimate it. I for one played through the entire VN, especially After Story. Truly one of the most saddest stories ever painted. It is Key’s key marketing element (pardon the pun). Kanon and AIR are about the same in terms to terk-jerking ability, if not slightly less adept than Clannad.

I wouldn’t even consider Persona 4 a sad story, it seems to have a kind of funky storyline for me at least. I haven’t tried out P3 though, will do that once I get my grubby hands on P3P (Persona 3 for the Playstation Portable, I’m surprised you made no mention of it, Netto :P ).

So far, most of the Key games hit me hard… although Clannad is sad… Kanon is also sad… when you get to Shiori’s arc… It makes you cry a bucket of tears…

I still don’t get how people could cry over P3 >_> I mean, it was pretty much expected the MC will die and everyone else are going to be cliche. I am actually surprised that P4 MC is alive, for fighting a God.

    Personally, I would say Clannad almost hit the spot for me. >_>;

*Waits for people to admit having “manly” tears over MGS4*

    Persona 4

Just how is Persona 4 a tearjerker? It has the least dark and sad story in Persona series, and if one would say a possible tearjerker for Persona series, it would be Persona 3. But, Persona 4’s gameplay is far better and fun than Persona 3.

And Clannad being on the list surprised me too. Never underestimate a visual novel, I would say.

Darkfrost: Err, Mother 2 isn’t a visual novel. It’s an RPG for the SNES, and was released in the US under the name of Earthbound. Sadly it was never that popular in the US, mainly due to terrible advertising, never got a European release, but it was pretty popular in Japan.

Ah, thanks for the clarifications! Yeah, never really heard about that title before…so I was a little “ugh”.
