Looks like someone’s spending too much time on games!
We all know MMOs are timesinks. Basically, once you start playing a MMO that you love (such as WoW), chance is that you’ll probably find yourself stuck on the game for several hours per day. Without a definite figure though, there’s little indication of actually how much gamers spend on the MMO.
However, in a recent study done by Gamesindustry.com, it is said that MMOs actually takes a huge 15% of the total gaming time in a single country. The survey which was done by Gamesindustry was conducted over both US and EU regions, and a total of 13,000 people had participated in it. All of these participants ranges from 8 years old onwards.
On an average in US, 14% of the total time spent on video games are dedicated towards MMOs, and that’s a good 5.5hrs per week on MMOs, while console gamers only clocks a weaker 4.9hrs per week and with casual gamers behind at about 4.8hrs per week. In the EU, however, the figures jumps from places to places, and UK has seen the lowest amount of hours clocked in MMOs.
Other interesting bits includes the percentage of online people who plays MMORPGs. About 21% of people who has internet access in US have played MMOs before, and it comes up to about 10% in the EU countries.
Here comes one interesting fact: MMO Veterans would know that there’s a term for MMORPG, which is called Many Men Online Role Playing Girls, and it seems to be proven true in this particular survey as out of the 13,000 people who had participated in the survey, it is found out that nearly 2/3 of them are males. I guess we can safely say that 66% of the players you see in a game would be males, and if the game has more than 33% female characters… well, you probably know what it means!
However, the survey had also revealed something that would probably surprise a whole load of people: MMOs are extremely popular with the age group of 8 to 12, a group which is supposed to be playing other games except… well, playing online! And they say how dangerous the internet is!
