Ziddy Plays #1 : Ragna Chronicle

Gypsy (Ragnarok Online)

Welcome to the 1st edition of “Ziddy Plays“, it will be an ongoing part of a series of me having hands on over games and reviewing them. This is mainly based on opinion and preference so if you want to use this as a guide to try new games out, always keep in mind that everyone has different tastes. With that in mind, here comes the 1st game, “Ragna Chronicle“.

Ziddy plays “Ragna Chronicle”

Name : Ragna Chronicle

Language : Japanese

Type : Doujin Game (PC)

Genre : Platformer

Players : 1

Ragna Chronicle is a Japanese Doujin Game based off the MMORPG Ragnarok Online. In this game, you play as an Acolyte, traveling to different parts of Glast Heim, buying different items and fighting off evil monsters such as Zombies and Porings.

Gameplay is similar to the Megaman/Rockman series. The Acolyte has different attacks/spells. For example, he can use his mace for close quarters combat (Not like the Z Saber, it only hits once) and rely on Holy Light for ranged attacks(similar to the X buster). Spells such as Blessing and Heal are present as well, boosting your chances of survival.

When you aren’t exploring the different parts of Glast Heim, you get to visit the Prontera Church and the Prontera Shop. At the church, you can talk to a fellow Priestess while at the shop, you can purchase items (Red Potions, equipment, etc) and talk to the shopkeeper.

Music and sound effects are similar to the original Ragnarok Online MMORPG as well, I noticed a remixed Prontera theme and a few familiar sound effects such as Heal. Of course, there are original sound effects and music present in the game as well.

I’ve only played the game for quite some time and managed to defeat a Rybio boss and to tell you the truth, I like it. Despite not knowing the Japanese Language and the storyline, I still find the quality of the game to be great. Take note that this isn’t a commercial game, it’s just a Doujin Game. Hence, it’s impressive how professional the game turned out.

Pros : Gameplay that is challenging and resembles the Megaman Series. The quality of the game is impressive, even though it is just isn’t a commercial game.

Cons : Japanese language only, no knockback when hit.

Rating : 8/10 - An action game similar to Megaman/Rockman and based off the Ragnarok Online MMORPG? That’s two good things coming together, making the result great.
