Japanese Charity Fiesta & Bazaar
Author: Chong Mizunaga

Just yesterday, I was at a Japanese charity fiesta & bazaar, organized by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur.
To say the least, I was disappointed.
This event was held at Hotel Nikko, and to enter, I had to pay an on-the-spot ticket fee of RM15.

Despite being a Japanese bazaar, there wasn’t really that much Japanese stuff to buy. A lot of items there could be obtained locally. There weren’t even any geta for sale.
This was, perhaps, one of the few items worth looking into- pottery.

Being a bazaar for the public, I did not expect to see any otaku goods here, but lo and behold, there was one table that featured some old otaku goods.

There were tons of books, magazines, and supposedly limited edition GitS shirts.

There were tons of old magazines, and a lot with Evangelion at the front page. There were also some CDs for sale there, though they didn’t really look legit. ^^;
There was a vast variety of items, but, as I mentioned earlier, most of it could be obtained locally.

There was lots of Japanese food too, but even the food was the kind that could be easily found like food from Jusco, Yokomon, and Beard Papa.
While most other tables were selling out, this table remained unvisited. The food here was less unique, anywayNeedless to say, the food there was pretty expensive. All I had was this strawberry-flavor coated waffle that cost me RM3.

The strawberry flavor didn’t come out very well, but the waffle itself was pretty good. Overall, it was an okay snack.
Though the goods there were not really worth looking at, they had some other attractions as well, such as this-

Demonstration of how to prepare tea in the traditional, Japanese way.
There were also three games to play, though I only saw kids playing them.

Had absolutely no idea how to play these game though.

But the best attraction was this- try on a kimono(?) for a certain price, and have your photo taken against a backdrop (there was a nice backdrop which I did not take a picture of).

Of all the girls and guys on stage, this one little fella got a lot of attention from photographers.

Overall, my friends and I agreed that this event wasn’t worth the RM15 entry fee. But since that RM15 is going to charity, it’s all good.
Safe to say, I won’t be attending this event anymore in the future.

Any of you remember Yokomon? (which I mentioned here)
Well, look what I found!

Not sure when it came around, but my guess is not too long ago.

As you can see, it’s Japanese Ice-cream imported into Malaysia. They have some pretty… rare flavors, such as red bean and black sesame. (You can check out the rest of the flavors at their official site, which is currently under construction) I decided to give the Maccha (Green Tea) flavor a go.

I either do not like the taste of green tea ice cream, or it tasted bad. ^^;
It’s pretty pricey too. This cup of ice cream cost me RM 5.50! To have it on a cone would’ve been RM 6.50.
I have not tried the other flavors before though. If you have, perhaps you could tell us how it was?
BTW- this store is in the cineplex at Cineleisure Damansara.

Next Saturday, 12th of July, Malaysia will be celebrating Obon by holding the annual Bon Odori festival.
While the Obon is actually Buddhist custom to honor the deceased, the festival held in Malaysia is much more of a cultural thing. At the Bon Odori festival here, there’s lots of Japanese food (albeit a little pricey), and lots of people in yukatas.
The highlight of the Bon Odori festival, is, of course, the Bon Odori (Bon dance) itself.

Ebihara Yuri
Author: Chong Mizunaga

Ebihara Yuri is a Japanese model and actress. Her first big break was when she became an exclusive model for CanCam, a fashion magazine.

She’s acted in a couple of dramas before, and you can see a list (of those she’s acted in) here.

Some of you might know her as the model for McDonald’s Ebi Filet-O (For you non-Japanese speaking folk, that’s a shrimp fillet).
Another Ebi Filet-O commercial.
And another one.
Okay, I’ve gone a little overboard with the commercials, but here’s one last one ^^;

In an Oricon poll a few months ago, a question was asked: “Which ceebrity would you want to be smiling at you in a fast food restaurant?” Ebi-chan got eighth place! (Source - Alafista)

When Danny mentioned her, I instantly fell in love. ^^; She’s so pretty, don’t you think? She’s got a great smile too ^^

Japanese Restaurants in Malaysia 2
Author: Chong Mizunaga

This is restaurant Rakuzen at Sri Hartamas shopping centre.

They serve Japanese food (obviously). Like most (high-end) Japanese restaurants, there’s a good variety of food to choose from. Wasn’t really paying attention to the sushi bit of the menu, but I do remember they had makizushi and temakizushi.
There were lots of other items on the menu, but I don’t quite remember them.. I know they had some teppanyaki sets, some bento sets (bento sets in this case are for more than one person), and sukiyaki (which can be found in most Japanese restaurants here).
Of course, they also have the classic 天麩羅 (Tempura) (Yum).
“Mixed Tempura” which was prawns, shiitake, some kind of vegetable, and a few other stuff I forget.I’m quite a bit of a “curry junkie”, so it’s カレーじゅ (Curry-jyu) for me.

Doesn’t look very appetizing here, but it was delicious. It’s rice, curry, chicken and potato.
While I was looking at the menu, I noticed 肉じゃが (nikujaga) on the menu. I didn’t know what it was at the time, and thought I’d just order it, since it didn’t seem like much..
But when I was presented with this, I knew I was in trouble ^^;
Clockwise: long beans, onion, noodles, beef, carrots, potatoI didn’t quite like the taste of this - too sweet for my tastes. What’s more, I was rather full from my curry-jyu, so eating this was a little.. tough ^^;
But when the dessert came, I suddenly had space in my stomach.
I actually wanted some Yukimi Daifuku, but they were out :\ Instead, I had to settle for this.. Tiramisu daifuku ^^;
Tiramisu DaifukuWasn’t too bad, but I’d still rather have a yukimi daifuku.
The Japanese food here is pretty good, but as usual, is a little pricey. Each set meal (such as my Curry-jyu and nikujaga) costs about RM12.
Rakuzen is on the ground floor, but can’t remember where exactly ^^;
Not very helpful, but you can see a little more info on Rakuzen here.
